Why have decking in your garden?

Decking is relatively easy to fit into your garden and the materials involved mean that is easy to customise to your space. It can be modified and extended should you require it to be. Timber decking is hard-wearing and can be built to meet your needs, with so many different styles and design options.

Plus, having decking can make your garden look put-together, and it can really come into its own in the brighter, warmer months. In fact lots of people (including many of our customers here at Savoy) choose decking purely for aesthetic reasons, and there’s no denying that it can really improve the appearance of your garden. There are different styles of decking, and it’s also customisable to suit your tastes.

It provides a functional space, and can improve accessibility on sloped terrain

Decking provides a hard, solid flooring that can be used for an outdoor seating area, an area for your kids to play in, or simply a space to relax. You can add fences to create an enclosed space, decorate with potted plants and outdoor furniture, and even add an awning for some shelter from the weather. Having a decked area brings the refined indoors to the outdoors.

If your garden is sloped or uneven, it may be inaccessible for some people. Having decking provides an even surface and levels out your garden. The height of your decking can be adjusted, and slopes or steps added, without having to do any kind of extreme excavating or groundwork preparation. You can opt for elevated decks or split-level decks to add dimension to your garden.

It is hardwearing and easy to maintain

Unlike many aspects of your garden and outdoor space, one of the greatest advantages of decking is that it doesn’t require much maintenance, and unlike stone and paved patios, you won’t need to fight off weeds. There are different treatments that can be added to the timber, and you can usually customise decking with different stains and paints, so your decking is the right colour to match your tastes.

It’s a good DIY project

If you fancy taking it on, decking is a great DIY project. (Especially if you choose one of our easy decking kits here at Savoy Timber!) The materials don’t require specialist cutters and saws like stone paving, so it’s a relatively easy, highly enjoyable project you can take on. As long as you’re confident with basic carpentry and have the determination to tackle the project, fitting your own decking is something you can do over a weekend for instant results.
