At Savoy Timber, we pride ourselves on our ability to stock a huge range of products for our customers, and this extends to our range of bi-fold doors. Sometimes known as concertina doors, we stock three main types here at Savoy Timber. Essentially, there are two main types: our internal bi-fold doors (which come in two subtypes: standard fit and made to measure) and our internal folding sliding door system.
If you’ve never bought an internal bi-fold door for your home before, it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed by all the information available, so this week on the blog we’ve created a handy buyer’s guide to help you get a handle on it all. Let’s start with the key advantages!
The first thing you might be thinking is “I’ve got lots of ordinary doors in the house – what do I need a bi-fold door for?” It’s an absolutely fair question – with a lot of possible answers! As we’ve touched on above, there are various types of different bi-fold doors, but they’ve all got a set of distinct advantages in common.
There’s nothing quite like picking out a bi-fold door for your house that just fits the look perfectly. Whether your house is a contemporary, modern style or has more of a rustic, cottage feel, we’ve got the door for you here at Savoy Timber. As well as being physically attractive, bi-fold doors offer you increased control over the space in your home, especially if they act as a divider between two rooms. This is a particularly appealing feature of doors like our Internal Folding Sliding Door System (which we’ll go into more detail about below.) You can roll them back and merge your living and dining room together to spend some quality time together as a family, for example, or you can close them to give yourself some welcome personal space.
Our glass panelled internal bi-fold doors are especially popular amongst our customers for their ability to let natural light flow easily throughout the home. Humans are daylight animals, and we naturally respond to proper sunlight with energy, happiness and motivation. All very desirable qualities for anyone’s home! Again, this is even more clear to see with our Internal Folding Sliding Door System, whose full-length glass panels always let in the maximum amount of light possible.
Whatever their size or finish, the core design of bi-fold doors makes them fantastic space-saving measures, as they don’t need to swing all the way out in order to open like a regular door, meaning they’re valuable practical alternatives for rooms like airing cupboards, or tucked-away closets.
Most bi-fold doors have great thermal efficiency as long as they’re closed properly, so you don’t need to worry about draughts or chills sweeping in from under them. So if you’re worrying that they might not be suited for winter in your house – don’t be! They do the job just fine.
We’re probably hitting this point home hard enough by now at Savoy Timber, but we’ve really got a wide range of choice available in our stock. Whether you’d prefer to buy a pre-finished internal door or an unfinished one, or whether you can’t decide between pine, oak or glazed – we’ve got all the answers. Our internal bi-fold doors come in three varieties – so let’s go into them in a bit more detail now.
As we’ve already mentioned above, internal bi-fold doors are brilliant space-saving measures. This makes them particularly useful in smaller homes, or in corners where space might be at a premium (in other words; there’s not much of it!). Instead of swinging outwards like normal doors, internal bi-fold doors will live up to their name by folding in on themselves as they slide across, so you don’t have to, say, awkward back up against an adjacent wall to get the door fully open. Owners of some older period properties may know the feeling well – it’s rarely fun, and it’s never dignified.
Each of our standard fit doors is simple and easy to fit, and is supplied complete with the hardware needed to hang it (including the bi-fold track system itself). This means you can get them up and running – so to speak – with the minimum of faffing about; maybe even the very same afternoon if you want to!
Of course, there are always going to be some spaces in which our standard fit doors won’t…well, won’t fit. It’s in these sorts of situations – like period properties and other unusual spaces – that our Made To Measure bi-fold doors really come in handy. At Savoy Timber, we can provide internal bifold doors in bespoke sizes that aren’t available anywhere else, precisely engineering them to fit your doorframe exactly. Rest assured that during the process, we’re also careful to make allowances for your track – after all, unless we did, the door wouldn’t fit!
Our Internal Bi-Fold doors, both Standard Fit and Made To Measure, come in a variety of styles, grains and finishes, so you can be sure that whatever the style or feel of your home, we’ve got a door to suit you. This includes knotty pine grains (perfect for rustic properties), internal white finishes (ideal for contemporary homes), Victorian wood finishes, colonial, glazed doors with clear or patterned glass, and even Louvre varieties for bathrooms and airing cupboards. Feel free take your pick!
Our sliding door system is a high-quality, contemporary styled room divider that brings both a practical flexibility and an outstanding aesthetic value to your home. With it, you can transform one large room into two smaller individual spaces whenever you like. Essentially, it organises the room so that it can serve dual purposes, without needing to be totally redesigned.
This is particularly useful for family homes, for example if the children are watching cartoons while you’re entertaining friends. Instead of trooping everyone elsewhere or sending the kids elsewhere, you can simply draw the divider across. It’s made even more beneficial by its glass construction, which means you can block out ambient noise while still being able to keep an eye on what’s happening on the other side. It also means that plenty of natural light can still pass through to both individual segments – which is always nice.
Our Internal Folding Door System includes the handle and locking system, and incorporates a market-leading track, so you can rest safe in the knowledge that your doors will slide effortlessly into place every single time. It’s got a fantastic contemporary styling, too – and its oak construction and versatile design making it equally ideal for any home, whether it’s modern or rustic.
The cost of internal bi-fold doors mainly depends on what sort of style and finish you want. At Savoy Timber, ours range from under £70 to just over £250. Our Internal Folding Sliding Door system is under £650, too – which, take it from us, isn’t at all bad for a door that size!
The reason we stock doors in such a wide price range is because we want to have something for everyone here at Savoy Timber, and we understand that sometimes cost can be a factor. Our Oak internal bi-fold doors tend to scale up to the middle to the higher end of that price range, but to be honest, there aren’t an awful lot of hard and fast rules when it comes to our inventory. If you want to invest in a high-end contemporary white bi-fold door, then we’ve definitely got the solution for you. Having said that, if you’re keen on the colour and style but can’t quite hit the price tag, we’ve got plenty of similar doors slightly further down our price range, too. Trust us, whatever you want, we’ve got it – and you can get the look for your home all without breaking the bank.
Our experts get plenty of questions here at Savoy, both over the phone and in-store, so in order to save you making the trip or picking up your mobile, we’ve listed three of the most common ones here.
Our bi-fold doors are mainly designed for internal use rather than a barrier from outside to inside, so for the standard fit and made-to-measure options are more focused on convenience for you than security. However, our Internal Sliding Door System comes packaged with handles and a locking system, which close it just as easily and securely as you’d expect from any other high-quality door.
Like almost all of our products here at Savoy Timber, our bi-fold doors are very easy to install. Each one comes complete with all the hardware necessary to fit it, including the heavy-duty track for the finished door to glide smoothly into place. We don’t expect you to do it by guesswork, though – we also include clear, detailed fixing instructions that walk you through the process step by step.
It’s not as much of a worry as you might think. Essentially, our standard fit bi-fold doors come in three standard widths: 24”, 27”, and 30”. All you need is to quickly measure up the size of the opening you plan to fill, and if it matches one of the above widths then it’s just a matter of browsing through our inventory until you find one you like that fits!
If your opening is of a different size, however, you’re probably looking at one of our Made To Measure internal bi-fold doors. Simply enter in your measurements on the product page when placing your order, and we’ll do all the hard work for you. By the way, this include sanding down the door an extra 37mm to allow for the track, so if it looks a bit shorter at first glance, don’t panic – that’s why!
Bi-fold doors are only a part of the huge range of doors we stock here at Savoy Timber. You can browse our stock in its entirety by clicking here, or pop into any one of our showrooms in Blackpool, Wigan or Preston to see them for yourself – and while you’re there, our friendly members of staff will be only too happy to lend a hand!
