Door Frequently Asked Questions

Door Frequently Asked Questions

What type of treatment should I use on my internal or external door?

That depends on the ultimate finish you are seeking. There are many different types of finish available in the market which purport to be suitable for use with doors. Savoy Timber do not have any preference towards any particular manufacturer or brand. However, we strongly support the use of solvent based products which are able to provide a full and complete seal to our products. We believe the use of water based treatments should be avoided with all kiln dried timber products. If in doubt, please consult us.

Can I use exterior grade doors as interior doors?

Not usually. External doors are manufactured using timber with a higher moisture content than that used internally. Exposure of external quality doors to the arid centrally heated conditions of modern properties risks them becoming warped or deformed.

Do I need special glass in a glazed fire door?

Yes, always. Not only the type of glass but the method of installing it is very important in ensuring the door's performance. Always ask to see the supplier's Assessment Summary Data Sheet that should accompany the door

How are the doors constructed?

An assortment of materials and construction methods are utilized throughout our ranges. All materials are wood based but most are commonly ‘engineered’. This means that the materials have sometimes been reformed from raw timber to form composite timber components. High density chipboard, block timber, laminates and fibreboards are all commonly used within our doors. In general, this means that the raw material is managed more efficiently to produce better stability and affordability to the product.

Can your doors be modified?

Sometimes within reason, yes. We try to provide reasonable tolerances to enable doors to be resized to suit individual frames. However, should radical resizing be required we suggest you consult us as the long-term stability of your door might be compromised if it has been altered inappropriately.

What does it mean when a door is described as being of engineered construction?

Usually it means that at least some components have been formed from composite materials. Timber block cores, MDF and high density chipboard are some of the materials used within the manufacture of doors. The use of engineered construction offers more efficient use of the raw materials, much better stability in the performance of the product and more variety in design.

What is tri-glazed?

Tri-glazed (or triple glazed) when describing our external door ranges refers to the number of sheets of glass used within the glazing units. Where decorative panes are featured, they are sandwiched between two sheets of clear safety glass. This renders the glass panels easier to clean and also helps ensure that the decorative detailing remains crisp and sharp as it does not deteriorate through direct weathering.
